CARDINALS ATTENDANCE DROP โ Are we (avid fans of the 2024 Chicago Cubs) in a position to throw stones at the moment? No, probably not. Even after a particularly hot month of August (16-8), the Cubs are just two games over .500 and behind two teams in the Wild Card race.
But am I (a petty Cubs fan) ever going to skip an opportunity to poke fun at the Cardinals or their self-ascribed “best fans in baseball” whenever I get the chance? NOOOOOOOPE.
Thus, I am pleased to report that the third-place 2024 Cardinals (67-67) are experiencing record-breaking attendance drops at Busch Stadium this year.
Cardinals Attendance Drop
A couple of days ago, the St. Louis-Post Dispatch reported that the five smallest announced crowds in the history of Busch Stadium III (excluding the pandemic years) all happened here at the end of August.
- August 27, 2024: 27,224
- August 22, 2024: 28,630
- August 26, 2024: 28,697
- August 21, 2024: 29,580
- August 20, 2024: 30,022
- September 5, 2012: 30,090
- August 23, 2012: 30,343
- June 14, 2022: 31,193
- May 6, 2024: 31,283
- July 31, 2024: 31,365
And guess what! The Cardinals attendance at Busch Stadium over their last two games since that article was published made the (reverse) top 10!
- August 28, 2024: 30,999
- August 29, 2024: 26,553
That means that eight of the 11th lowest *announced* attendance days in Busch Stadium III history happened this season, in the last month.
But that’s not all. You may have noticed that I put a couple of asterisks around the word announced. And that’s because the actual estimated number of attendees “who came through the turnstiles” on August 27 fell below 13,000 (per St. Louis Post-Dispatch).
Here are some visuals and comments from those around the team/stadium:
