Although he’s no longer on the Chicago Cubs, you’ll forgive me for wanting to see Christopher Morel flourish with the Tampa Bay Rays, or wherever else he ultimately lands. Like the guy at the heart of the trade on the other side, Isaac Paredes, things have gone rather poorly for Morel with Tampa Bay since the deal (.195/.275/.320/72 wRC+).
But there is one thing that has gone VERY well, and it’s a nice moment that the Rays broadcast recently shared:
Morel, while playing a professional baseball season, was doing homework after games so that he could finish up high school and earn his degree. That’s pretty awesome. Consider that, having signed with the Cubs as a 16-year-old, it’s not like Morel HAD TO go back and finish high school. He has long had his job. But he wanted to do it, and to do it for his mom, and I think that’s very sweet and very impressive.
Congratulations to Christopher Morel, and all the best to him with his new club. And love to his mom!
