The headline says it all, and I’m shaking my head as I read it again. It’s just the literal truth of what happened, and it’s a reminder of how freaking crazy baseball can be.
The San Diego Padres, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers by two runs in the 9th inning, were facing two on and nobody out. Shohei Ohtani, with the rest of the top of the order behind him, was waiting on deck. Getting out of that situation in ANY way would be impressive.
And then the Padres turned a triple play-play to end the game, and clinch a spot in the MLB postseason:
The Padres will now, at a minimum, be one of the three Wild Card teams. But they are also now just 2.0 games behind those Dodgers for the lead in the NL West …
