It’s been known for a while now that St. Louis Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak planned to step back from his role after the 2025 season, when his contract ends. What hasn’t been known is exactly what the plan was from there.
Now, it is known:
Bloom, who has been working as an advisor in the Cardinals’ front office for the past year, was previously the president of baseball operations for the Red Sox for four seasons, and was the senior VP of baseball operations for the Rays before that. He has been working in baseball front offices for nearly two decades now, with a range of experiences, and is highly-regarded in the industry.
Which is to say, I kinda hate that the Cardinals are very smartly setting up a succession plan, a year in advance, to hand things over from Mozeliak to Bloom.
I also think, even though Mozeliak is staying on for a year, you can expect Bloom to have an outsized voice this year, including in other front office hirings and firings this offseason. Apparently GM Michael Girsch is moving to a different role, so Mozeliak and Bloom have a GM job available to hire for. Stay tuned on that front.
Also stay tuned on whether the Cardinals engage in a full rebuild, as discussed earlier today.
