Time to welcome back an old friend, as the Chicago Cubs are using today’s rostering deadline to pick up a lefty off of waivers.
Kinda sorta World Champion Rob Zastryzny is back:
Zastryzny, 32, was the Cubs’ second rounder all the way back in 2013, and as the tweet notes, made his big league debut in 2016. He was an up-down depth arm the next couple years, before doing the organizational-bouncing thing at the Triple-A/MLB border. He has perennially been good enough to be desired by teams at the edges of their bullpen, but not quite productive enough to stick.
Last year, Zastryzny was an outstanding reliever for the Brewers at Triple-A and in MLB, though mostly at Triple-A. He does not have any minor league options remaining, so unless the Cubs try to outright him at some point this offseason (a definite possibility), he will have to make the big league bullpen out of Spring Training, or at that time hit waivers.
