I mentioned near the end of the year, in discussing Kyle Hendricks’ imminent departure from the Chicago Cubs and first run through free agency, that a rebuilding team with a young pitching staff would be smart to snap up Hendricks so he could provide them different layers of value.
But honestly I had zero clue it would happen so fast:
Signing with the Angels would be a homecoming for Hendricks, who grew up in Southern California. I wonder if that’s part of how/why this deal came together so incredibly quickly.
On the pitching-needy Angels, Hendricks would pitch at the back of the rotation currently occupied by a number of relative question marks. His value could be significant, though, in helping younger pitchers who come up, even if his best days on the mound are behind him. But I’m not ruling out that he could still be a decent 4th/5th option on an average team, as the Angels project to be. I’ll certainly be rooting for it.
I guess there must’ve been an understanding right away that the Cubs were never going to retain Hendricks on a big league deal (no surprise, and the right call), so good on him for getting a deal done elsewhere quickly. The Angels, having already traded Griffin Canning for Jorge Soler, are the fast-movers this offseason.
More on this soon, I expect.
UPDATE: Not a bad guarantee for Hendricks, but also worth it for the Angels, all things considered:
