Got the Christmas tree up yesterday, and I have to say, it really does look/feel nice to have it in place already. A little extra holiday cheer …
- Old friend Mike Napoli will be joining Terry Francona’s new staff in Cincinnati:
Per source, Mike Napoli will be joining Terry Francona and the Reds in some capacity. Had been Cubsโ first base coach.

- I wish Napoli well with his new gig, though I suppose not too well. Was always extremely well-liked, and seemed to bring a lot of joy and thoughtfulness to his role.
- Speaking of Napoli, we still don’t know who will be replacing him at first base for the Cubs. Jesse Rogers has reported on the radio that Andy Haines – formerly a hitting coach for the Cubs, Brewers (under Craig Counsell), and Pirates – was returning to the Cubs, but the position was not yet known. I don’t *think* he’d move over to a first base coach role, but I suppose it’s possible. It’s also possible, probable even, he’ll working in some kind of hitting role. Officially, though, first base is the only coaching spot that is clearly still open.
- Nick Madrigal was in the news recently because he was non-tendered by the Cubs, and now the other half of that ill-fated Craig Kimbrel trade is in the news: Codi Heuer is re-signing with the Rangers on a minor league deal. Heuer, who is still only 28, looked like he was going to be a key reliever for the Cubs for years to come when his elbow popped in the spring of 2022. It was a more serious injury than your typical Tommy John surgery situation, so the recovery was extra long. He returned to the mound in the summer 2023 but his elbow fractured during an outing with Iowa, and he never made it back to the bigs with the Cubs. He signed a minor league deal with the Rangers earlier this year, but did not pitch. So the rehab trail continues. If he does finally make it back this season, it will have been four years between big league pitches. That rehab process really has to suck.
- Fun clip here, with Jameson Taillon putting in work at Tread Athletics:
- Tread, of course, is the training facility that newly-hired pitching specialist Tyler Zombro worked at (and will still have a connection to). It does not surprise me in the least to see Taillon popping up in a clip like this, because he’s always been super into pitching data, tweaks, grips, and the general nerdery behind the art.
- Team USA took home the Bronze medal in the Premier12, essentially having to beat Venezuela twice in Japan to get there, and you now they got some production from Matt Shaw in the process:
- Shaw went 2-7 in the two games, with a double, two RBI, and three walks. He finished the tournament with a .412/.500/.706 slash line. He had more walks than strikeouts, and as many extra-base hits as strikeouts. He drove in a team-leading 14 runs, and was hitting in the two-hole for a very good lineup the entire tournament. Let’s just surmise that it was a very good experience for Matt Shaw. The only question now: does his next big game also take place in Japan, when the Cubs open the 2025 season against the Dodgers?
- Black Friday deals week is here at Amazon, so now is the time to start perusing for stuff you have wanted to see on sale all year. #ad
- Phillies outfield looks ROUGH (and that’s with Austin Hays included, and he was just non-tendered):

- Yes, I think it probably is fair to wonder whether the Phillies could become a suitor for Cody Bellinger if the Cubs are insistent on trying to trade him.
- This is fun:
26000 days ago (September 17, 1953), former Kansas City Monarchs shortstop Ernie Banks becomes the first black player in the history of the Chicago Cubs. Banks goes 0-for-3 with an error, but things do improve from there.

- Bulls lost, but Matas Buzelis had some big moments.
- Blackhawks dropped one in OT against the Flyers.
