Although his immediate future with the organization is perhaps up to matters beyond his control, I don’t think anyone doubts that Matt Shaw will be a big part of the Chicago Cubs in time. Probably for stretches of the 2025 season, and possibly as early as Opening Day if Nico Hoerner has to start the season on the shelf following forearm surgery (or if Hoerner is traded).
Shaw, the Cubs’ top pick just last year, rocketed up through the minor leagues on the strength of a simultaneously disciplined and vicious approach at the plate. There is controlled violence in that swing, and the results have been outstanding. Shaw worked his way up to Triple-A, and then starred on Team USA this fall, all while adjusting to new defensive expectations. Having been primarily a shortstop in college, Shaw played increasingly at third base and second base as a professional, and he’ll have to keep doing that until there’s a settled spot for him to grab.
