It wasn’t much of a prediction to say the Chicago Cubs would sign at least one pitching prospect from the recent Tread Athletics pro day. For one thing, the Cubs pretty much always sign at least one pitching prospect from these pro days. For another thing, the up-and-coming pitching executive the Cubs just landed – Tyler Zombro – came from Tread, and still has a relationship there. So the Cubs were almost certainly going to sign at least one guy, and it was probably going to be a good get, too.
Sure enough, here’s the first:
Second guy off the board as Jordan Goldmann signs with the Cubs! ✍️โ

Goldman threw 85-87 in college. Less than a year later, he ripped 94-95 mph with a four-seam, sinker, gyro slider, and a changeup that averaged under 4" IVB and 19+" HB. 🤯โ

Jordan Goldmann, 23, pitched his college days at Le Moyne College in New York, and the results were never quite there. So this is a pure scouting play after his work at Tread. And, at least as far as that signing post says, his stuff took an enormous step forward. Exactly the type of guy who can plausibly emerge as a legit future prospect in a situation like this.
Goldmann is officially an undrafted free agent signing, so you can mentally categorize him as like a late-round guy heading into his first Spring Training.
We’ll see if there are more signings coming from Tread in the coming days. Stateside roster limits mean that you can’t go as wild as you could in years past, so it’s possible that Goldmann is it.
Then again, the Cubs have to save a spot for this Chicagoan:
