Today, Houston Astros GM Dana Brown talked about third baseman Alex Bregman like he was already gone from the organization, despite his free agency still ongoing. Does it actually mean anything? Hmm, well, that’s the kind of thing we ponder when we’re Obsessing.
During his address at the team's annual media luncheon, Dana Brown twice spoke about Alex Bregman in the past tense, saying once that the team "lost Bregman."— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) February 4, 2025
Dana Brown: “We lost Tucker and Bregman but we added back Paredes and Walker”

.@astros GM Dana Brown just made not one but two references to “losing Tucker and Bregman” this offseason. So take that however you’d like. #BuiltForThis pic.twitter.com/Z2mF8aachq— Adam Clanton (@adamclanton) February 4, 2025
Pairing Bregman with Kyle Tucker, who was traded to the Cubs (and is thus DEFINITELY gone), is an interesting thing.
Brown sort of clarified his comments later – saying Bregman is still being discussed internally – but mostly just didn’t want to say anything definitive either way:

So, was it a slip on stage and then an attempt to walk it back? Or was the comment on stage just a misspeak?
Of note, earlier today, Michael Schwab indicated that the Astros still have the best offer on the table for Alex Bregman:
I believe Alex Bregman wants to return to the Astros. But he would definitely like the idea of the Red Sox.
What's he waiting on? Money lining up.
Astros still have the best offer. https://t.co/dJkB1GdZeE— Michael Schwab (@michaelschwab13) February 4, 2025
That may well have been the case as of this morning, and it could still be the case now. Maybe the Astros front office is just working overtime in the messaging to make sure they don’t lose any leverage.
As far as we know, the Astros, Cubs, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tigers are still pursuing Alex Bregman to some degree and at varying price levels.
UPDATE: Just a little additional color on where things stand:
Dana Brown says they’re no longer talking to Alex Bregman or Scott Boras. All conversations about Bregman remain “internal.”
