Orlando Magic 2024 NBA Mock Draft: Search For a Point Guard Continues

Orlando Magic 2024 NBA Mock Draft—The NBA is changing things up this year with a revamped draft format for the 2024 season. This year’s 78th annual draft will be spread over two nights, a first since the league standardized the draft to two rounds in the late 1980s. Previously held in a single-night spectacle, the draft will now take place on June 26th at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for the first round, followed by the second round on June 27th at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in Manhattan.

The second round will also see an extended time allotment between picks, with a shift from two minutes to four. Continuing a trend from the past two years, the draft will feature 58 picks instead of the usual 60 due to tampering penalties levied against the Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns.

Orlando Magic 2024 NBA Mock Draft

The Orlando Magic emerged as a defensive powerhouse this season, their third under Coach Jamahl Mosley. They finished the regular season ranked second in the league, an impressive feat for a young team with only one player over 30 (Joe Ingles).

While second-year phenom Paolo Banchero grabbed headlines, Jalen Suggs’ transformation was arguably the bigger story. After a shaky start offensively in his first two years, Suggs embraced a new role as a “3-and-D” shooting guard. Suggs’ emergence as a reliable shooter was crucial, as Wagner, the team’s second-leading scorer, struggled mightily from beyond the arc (28.1%). Orlando was one of the league’s worst 3-point shooting teams, which led to significant spacing problems and limited offensive efficiency.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Magic’s strong defense kept them competitive. Their ability to win games through hustle and defense, a hallmark of young, scrappy teams, bodes well for their future.

Now, the focus shifts to the offseason, where the Magic’s needs are clear. Finding a true point guard and bolstering their 3-point shooting are top priorities. Despite drafting numerous guards in recent years, including Anthony Black and Jett Howard, none have truly blossomed. This summer, they need to aggressively pursue a high-volume 3-point shooting guard who can run the offense alongside Banchero.

Orlando Magic 2024 NBA Mock Draft – Pick No. 18

Isaiah Collier – USC

Position: PG

Size: 6’3″, 210 lbs

Age/Year: 19, Freshman

Nationality: American

Pro Comparison (per The Ringer): Tyreke Evans, Emmanuel Mudiay

Isaiah Collier would fit in with Orlando’s defensive-minded culture from Day 1. He’s a big-bodied point guard who’s a strong on-ball defender when engaged. Offensively, he can finish in traffic and has flashed some upside as a shooter, though it’s not his top asset as he enters the league.

If the Magic believe they can land a playmaking point guard via free agency, I think they’ll target a young shot-creator with this selection.
