How Many NBA Championships Have the Dallas Mavericks Won?

The Dallas Mavericks knocked the Minnesota Timberwolves out of the 2024 NBA Playoffs and are headed to the NBA Finals! How many NBA Championships have the Mavericks won? How many times have they reached the Finals? Let’s look at the team’s history.

How Many Championships Have the Mavericks Won?

The Dallas Mavericks have won one NBA Championship in franchise history. In 2011, Dirk Nowitzki led the team to a 4-2 series win over the Miami Heat. The Heat had just put together the big three of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade that season.

It was a dominant Western Conference Finals for Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic as the two superstars beat down the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 4-1 series victory. Doncic was elite as he averaged 32.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists in the series while shooting 43.4% from three.

Irving was also a beast for Dallas scoring 27.0 points per game while shooting 49.0% from the field and 37.5% from three. The Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 series lead before dropping game 4. Luka and Kyrie each scored 36 points in game 5 to close out the series.

Mavericks NBA Finals Appearances

This is the third NBA Finals appearance in franchise history for the Dallas Mavericks. Oddly enough, the Dallas Mavericks’ two previous matchups were both against the Miami Heat. The Mavs lost to Dwyane Wade and Shaq 4-2 in 2006. In 2011, Dirk Nowitzki and company beat Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh.

Now, they will get to face a new squad in the NBA Finals as they battle Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the Boston Celtics.

Nowitzki Won Finals MVP in 2011

Dirk Nowitzki was a beast in the 2011 NBA Finals as he led the Mavs to their first championship in franchise history. He averaged 26.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while shooting almost 37% from three. He led the Mavs in minutes played, field goals made, points, and rebounds in the 4-2 series win.

In game 2, Dirk hit the game-winning layup with 3.6 seconds left for a 95-93 win. The Mavs trailed by as much as 15 in that game before storming back for the win.

For his efforts, he was named the NBA Finals MVP and joined the long list of legends who won the award.

Mavs Had No Answer for Wade in 2006

In their 2006 NBA Finals loss to the Miami Heat, the Mavericks had no answer for Dwyane Wade who dominated en route to winning the Finals MVP. Wade averaged 34.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.7 steals in the series as he really took the next step toward stardom.

Dirk Nowitzki averaged 22.8 points and 10.8 rebounds in the series while Jason Terry averaged 22.0 points per game. The Mavs struggled mightily from downtown in the series. They shot 28.4% as they went 33-116 in the 6-game series.

Dallas took the first two games of the series. In game 1, it was a 90-80 victory behind 32 points from Jason Terry. In game 2, Nowitzki had 26 points and 16 rebounds in a 99-85 win. Then, everything fell apart. The Heat ripped off 4 wins in a row. Wade scored 42 points in game 3 in a 98-96 victory. He followed that up with performances of 36, 43, and 36 points to close out the series.
