The West Coast Conference Tournament starts tonight. Much like the movies though, you don’t actually have to show up on time to catch what you want to see. All four teams playing tonight have odds higher than 200/1 to win a bracket of 10 teams. Even if you’re finding this on Saturday, I’m guessing the odds on the top two teams won’t have really shifted.
When is the West Coast Conference Tournament?
Thursday, March 2nd through Tuesday March, 7th.
Where is the West Coast Conference Tournament played?
For the 14th straight year, the coaching staffs will be asked to take a bunch of kids in the their teens and early 20s to Las Vegas and keep them out of trouble. The games will be played at the Orleans in Las Vegas (head west on Tropicana when you see the Excalibur).
How to watch the West Coast Conference Tournament
The first two rounds will be on a few streaming platforms like WCC TV, BYUtv and shown on some Bally’s networks where available. The Quarterfinals on will be on ESPN and ESPN2.
Who won the regular season title?
Gonzaga and St. Mary’s ended the season tied atop the standings with identical 14-2 records. St. Mary’s will have the #1 seed in the bracket by virtue of having a better NET ranking.
Defending Champ
Top seed and top ranked Gonzaga won their 20th WCC title last year.
Who will participate
All ten WCC members will play, some just won’t play until Monday.
How Many teams will the West Coast Conference send to the tournament?
Finally, a multi-bid league! I was running out of ways to say “just one”. The answer is almost certainly two, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. Both could lose right away and will still get in, obviously at least one of them is going to be an at-large no matter what. There is a tiny shot a three-bid WCC if say, Santa Clara were able to pull a couple upsets and steal the auto-bid. Never say never but, chances aren’t great and if your favorite team is on the bubble, you’d better hope things don’t go down like that.
West Coast Conference Tournament Bracket
Essentially a pared down version of the FA Cup. The tournament starts tonight, but the good teams don’t join us for a bit.
West Coast Conference Tournament Odds
A two-horse race to be sure, but that’s a big improvement of the one-horse races of years past. Odds via FanDuel.
West Coast Conference Tournament Preview
Not sure how deep I want to get on this. Gonzaga has the best offense in the league and it’s not particularly close. St. Mary’s has the best defense and again, not a real close second. Even if there were a straight up bracket where they both had to play 3-4 games to win, I’m not sure I could make a realistic case for anyone outside of them. The third favorite won 23 games this year and is 26/1.
That said, this is NOT a bracket that makes either team work too hard for the auto-bid as they both just need two wins to secure the title. Looking at ratings from a few sites and comparing metrics across the board, I’m not so sure Gonzaga was the best team this year. You can say they have been on the upswing over the past month and are the best team right now, but on a neutral and all things considered I don’t know that they should be laying this sort of price here.
West Coast Conference Tournament Prediction
Betting against Gonzaga used to be a better price, but the days of them being -1500 to win the tourney are gone and I’ll take what I beleive to be a peer rather than a lesser opponent at the dog price.
My Bet: St. Mary’s +125
