I grew up in Big 10 country and have a soft spot for this tournament, unfortunately as a Gophers fan, I don’t have a real shot at seeing my team do much in the 2023 Big 10 Tournament. Lucky for me I can find a new team to cheer on via the outright markets.
When is the Big 10 Tournament?
Wednesday, March 8th through Sunday the 12th.
Where is the Big 10 Tournament played?
The whole thing is still at the United Center in Chicago.
How to watch the Big 10 Tournament
Big Ten Network for the first two rounds with the final and semifinals on CBS and available to stream on Paramount+
Who won the regular season title?
Purdue lived up to expectations (for the most part) and won the regular season crown with a 15-5 mark.
Defending Champ
Fifth seeded Iowa nabbed the big last year in a tournament that saw only one of the top four seeds win a game.
Who will participate
Everyone, even Minnesota and Nebraska.
How Many teams will the Big 10 send to the tournament?
A lot. Likely seven at a minimum with six spots completely locked in right now. Illinois, Penn State, Wisconsin and Rutgers can help their cause with a nice showing down in the Windy City.
Big 10 Tournament Bracket
Double byes to the top four teams, single by to the next six and the worse of the bunch playing on Wednesday.
Big 10 Tournament Odds
Solid list of second choices here after the Boilermakers.
Big 10 Tournament Preview
Did Purdue get complacent down the stretch? I think it’s just a case of the league having like 10 good teams and everyone beating up on each other. Technically the Boildermakers are tied for the longest current winning streak in the Big 10 (two games). Everyone had rough go of it in February, it was a damn grind!
That said, there’s no shot in hell I can condone backing Purdue at this price. Not only for the reasons just laid out (parity), but a blueprint is starting to form on how to beat this team. Taking away Zach Edey works pretty well if the rest of the team isn’t shooting well, especially from deep. If they want to win in Chicago and/or make a run in the NCAAs, they will need to find a way to get more offense from the rest of the team. He currently takes almost 32% of all shots for his team.
I won’t through all the teams that I tossed out either for price, path or flaws, but I will say I narrowed things down to MSU, Maryland and the Hoosiers.
The odds for Maryland are, in part, due to them playing an extra game compared to the top four seeds, but if I’m going to spin a narrative (and I’m going to), I might say that a nice warm up game against a horrible Huskers/Gophers team could be a positive to get the sightlines at the United Center figured out and get into a rhythm. I find no joy in going up against Indiana, but my Terps beat ’em by 11 in the only meeting this year and are maybe getting a little less respect than they should be after a couple of late road losses.
Big 10 Tournament Prediction
Tough one, and if I hadn’t given myself a rule about one future per bracket, I think I’d also have some Sparty in my pocket here.
My Bet: Maryland +850
