Kenny Atkinson Is on Houston’s Head Coach Wish List
The Houston Rockets are coming off a third consecutive atrocious season and are in search of a new head coach. Atop that list is Golden State associate head coach Kenny Atkinson. And today, the Warriors granted the Rockets permission to speak to him for their vacant head coaching position.
Kenny Atkinson was destined to be highly sought after by many teams needing to fill their head coaching roll. He filled the position in Brooklyn for four years leading the Nets to a playoff appearance in the 2018-19 season. And has been an assistant with the Clippers and for the last two seasons, the Warriors since.
Houston won’t limit their search to just one guy, though. They’re currently in the process of scheduling many other interviews, according to both Shams Charania and Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter:
The Rockets are coming off their worst three years stretch in franchise history (61-177). And finishing with the leagues worst or second-worst record all three years.
They are, however, one of the youngest teams in the league with a good amount of talent. Their top seven remaining scorers are all in year three or less. They have two potential superstars in Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr. And they’ll likely have yet another top-3 selection in the upcoming draft. Whoever takes on the monumental mission of sending the Rockets back to the playoffs will have plenty of talent to with which to work.
