2023 Kansas City Chiefs Mock Draft Picks: Latest 2023 7-round Chiefs Draft

Once again, the offseason was a joyous one for the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs. However, KC needs some depth at many positions. Depending on who you trust, Kansas City could be looking at right tackle, backup quarterback, cornerback, another tight end, defensive tackle, or nickel cornerback with one of their high draft picks. The Chiefs also lost Orlando Brown to Cincinnati and Mecole Hardman to the Jets during free agency, so those could be specific players they need to replace. Let’s get to the picks!

2023 NFL Draft Mocks – Chiefs Mock Draft Roundup

Round 1 (No. 31 overall pick)

Pick: Will McDonald, EDGE Iowa State

Kansas City has little depth at the defensive line beyond Derrick Nnadi. Will McDonald in the first round would provide another sack artist to help put pressure on the opposing quarterback. McDonald had 36 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, a team-high five sacks (he had 11.5 in 2021), two passes defended, and averaged more than two forced fumbles each season at Iowa State. He deserves to be selected in the first round and would be great to snag this late, as Kansas City would have the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. His five sacks were 6.5 sacks down from his 2021 season, but a lot of that can be attributed to more attention he had from opposing teams as Iowa State’s best weapon on defense.

    Round 2 (No. 63)

Pick: Luke Musgrave, TE Oregon State

Chiefs fans may cry foul with this pick as they already have All-World tight end Travis Kelce. However, Kelce is getting older, and the Chiefs need to start looking to the future. Musgrave crushed the 2023 NFL scouting combine and many draft pundits are putting him ahead of players like Michael Mayer and Dalton Kincaid on their Big Board. There’s little chance Musgrave would be around with their third-round pick, so it looks like a good time to take the plunge. He’s played in only 11 games the past two seasons, so there’s some inexperience there, but he has an NFL bloodline and looks like a player you could mold behind Kelce.

    Round 3 (No. 95 overall)

    Pick: Trey Palmer, WR Nebraska

Palmer started his career at LSU but didn’t find enough playing time and ultimately ended up at Nebraska. It proved to be a good choice, as he posted 71 catches for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns. Palmer isn’t a household name with some, but he shouldn’t be a bust, either. He has ten touchdowns in his last 13 games played, showing real production and talent. In this NFL Team Draft, Palmer looks like a solid choice in Round 2 at a position of need for the Chiefs.

Round 4 (No. 122 overall from MIA)

    Pick: Kendre Miller, RB TCU

The Chiefs used a platoon of Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco last season, but they could clearly use help in the running game, especially after failing to add any notable free agent. Pacheco was the more impressive of the two runners for sure, but he did fumble three times and the Chiefs want to make sure he’s the real deal for at least two seasons before committing to him long-term. Miller is a solid running back and would provide some much-needed depth and insurance to the running back room.

    Round 4 (No. 134 overall)

    Pick: Moro Ojomo, DL Texas

The interior defensive line isn’t the biggest area of need for KC, but they could use some help for George Karlaftis and Chris Jones, especially after cutting Frank Clark and not re-signing Carlos Dunlap as of yet. After posting just two sacks in his first three seasons, Ojomo was able to post three sacks in last season alone. He’s more of a run-stopper than anything. He also won’t be a player to get four sacks in a game, he can be an anchor in the middle to stop opposing runners, force interior fumbles, and get some fumble recoveries. Overall, he has the potential to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines.

    Round 5 (No. 166 overall)

    Pick: Trey Dean, S Florida

The Kansas City Chiefs 2023 second-rounder at safety (Bryan Cook) is still a work in progress, so picking up Dean could be a solid choice here in Round 5. A disappointing 4.75 40-yard dash, 10’4″ broad jump, and otherwise average NFL Scouting Combine performance are going to push Dean down into the third day of the draft. In this 2023 NFL Mock Draft, this seemed like a solid choice for the Chiefs.

Round 6 (No. 178 overall is a Boise State surprise)

Pick: John Ojukwu, OT Boise State

The Chiefs failed to address the position in last year’s NFL Draft, so adding depth at tackle would be a good idea, especially after losing Orlando Brown to the Bengals. It’s possible the Chiefs address this position earlier in the draft, but the board didn’t fall in an advantageous way in this mock exercise. Ojukwu is a bit of a project, but he could be a starter or solid depth piece in time at tackle or guard.

    Round 6 (No. 217 overall)

    Pick: Puka Nacua, WR BYU

There are around 10 players with a similar profile in this draft as small wide receivers destined solely for the slot position. Pacua is different. He’s 6-foot-2 and not 5-foot-10 making him more than just a slot receiver prospect for Kansas City. With JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman both elsewhere, Kansas City could certainly use one or two receiver prospects from this year’s class. Nacua and Palmer would be a pretty solid pair.

    Round 7 (No. 249 overall)

    Pick: Max Duggan, QB TCU

Kansas City lost veteran backup Chad Henne to retirement this summer, so this could make some sense. Henne has been the Chiefs’ backup quarterback for the past four seasons and has even had some meaningful playing time the past two years, so this has suddenly become a year to address the position. Duggan led the TCU passing game all the way to the season-ending national title game. He’s efficient with the football, throwing 58 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions the past three seasons in a storied college career. More like 6-foot or 6-foot-2 than 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5, Duggan is on the shorter end of the spectrum and could have some trouble at the NFL level with long-armed pass rushers. But he’s well worth a dart throw this late in the draft! He could certainly grow to be the emergency quarterback the Chiefs could need, as the newly signed Blaine Gabbert isn’t the long-term answer.

    Round 7 (No. 250 overall)

Pick: Karl Brooks, DT Bowling Green

The Chiefs address the defensive line once again with Brooks, a small school prospect with huge numbers. Last year, he had 49 tackles including 18 tackles for loss and 10 sacks along with four pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Sure, the level of competition wasn’t elite, but a seventh-roun selection on a player who could be a small school gem is never a bad idea.
