Tournament Format

Like every PGA Championship held since 1958, this year’s tournament will be a stroke play event. Simply put, each golfer is trying to make the 70-player cut after Friday. Then outscore the rest of the field in hopes of raising the Wanamaker Trohphy on Sunday.

From it’s first ever event in 1916 until 1957 the PGA Championship was a match-play tournament. Although it’s unlikely to happen, some have lobbied for the tournament to return that scoring format.

PGA Championship History

Where/When does the 2023 PGA Championship tee off?

Three of the four major tournaments including this one alternate venues with The Masters being the only one held at the same local each year. This year we’re at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

The tournament tees off on Thursday, May 18th and will conclude on Sunday, May 21st.

2023 PGA Championship Championship Field

Barring any last minute injuries or extenuating circumstances, all of golfs best players make it a point to enter the field for this one. And as is customary for majors in this new era of golf, eligible LIV Tour players will be here as well. Which means that Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka, winners of three of the last five PGA Championships will once again be participating against Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and the 2022 winner Justin Thomas.

Jon Rahm is seeking his first PGA Championship win and his second major title of 2023. Also among the field is Rory McIlroy who is looking to become just the sixth golfer to win this major three or more times. And Jordan Speith who recently withdrew from last week’s AT&T Bryon Nelson due to injury.

Official tee-times have yet to be announced but you can see the whole field HERE

2023 PGA Championship odds

In what has become a weekly norm, John Rahm and Scottie Scheffler open as the favorites to raise the Wanamaker Trophy and by a significant margin. Trailing them as the only other golfers to open with odds inside 20-1 are Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay.

Two-time winner Brooks Koepka is a darkhorse at the sportsbook opening with the sixth best odds. While defending champ Justin Thomas sits near 25-1 in most markets. Make sure to compare the opening 2023 PGA Championship odds to current numbers for a good idea of where the money is going.

Just a regular guy who absolutely loves sports. I've been playing, watching, and recreationally betting on sports for over 30 years. My favorite sports to attack at the sportsbook are Football (NFL/NCAAF), College Basketball, and most recently - the NASCAR Cup Series. I'm not an "expert" and I don't have or use betting models, but I do put in the research and apply that to my wagers which are mostly backed by the trending data with of course a little, as Gibbs from the show NCIS would say "Gut Feeling" contributing to the side chosen. Sports betting should be fun and enjoyable so always play within your means and NEVER chase your losses. You can follow me on Twitter @Brian_Twining - Let's try and win some bets!
