RBC Canadian Open History
1904! That is the year of the first ever Canadian Open. Since then, only World War’s I & II, and covid have prevented the tournament from being played.
The PGA Tour’s Canada based tournament is a co-organized event by the PGA Tour and Golf Canada and is the third longest tenured event on the Tour. It trails only The Open Championship and next week’s U.S. Open in longevity.
The long history of the event should come as no surprise however. It’s organizing body Golf Canada was originally called the Royal Montreal Golf Club, which was founded in 1873. This makes it the oldest golf club in North America.
Tournament Sites
The Canadian Open has been played in few different provinces since it’s inception but none more often than Ontario. In fact, all but nine Opens have been held here.
Unlike all but one other non-major PGA event, the Canadian Open is not always played at the same venue. This year it’s at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto which makes it the 37th different hosting course. Atop the list for most hosted events is Glen Abbey in Oakville, which has done so on 30 different occasions.
RBC Canadian Open Past Winners
Despite such a long storied history, only 20 golfers have ever won the Canadian Open multiple times. Among them just four players have won three or more tournaments. With Leo Diegel sitting atop the list with four career victories. Amazingly, the Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus was never able to win here and unfortunately finished runner-up on seven different occasions.
Opening 2023 RBC Canadian Open Odds
During it’s over a century of golf, there have been only occurrences of a golfer winning consecutive tournaments with Leo Diegel doing it twice. The most recent addition to this club is Rory McIlroy who has won the two most recent Canadian Open tournaments.
