Every May, racecar drivers from across the world converge on Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. But the historical significance and honor that comes with winning the Indianapolis 500 aren’t the only reasons these racers look forward to the annual event. The Indy 500 Purse, especially the portion handed out to the winner, is amongst the largest in motorsports. Let’s take a sneak peek into the 2024 Indy 500 Purse and review payouts to past winners.
2024 Indy 500 Purse: How Much Will the Winner Get?
The exact prize money for the 2024 Indy 500 winner has yet to be officially announced. However, the prize purse has reached record heights in the last two years, and with the added attention brought on by NASCAR’s Kyle Larson participating this year, we can expect another substantial payout.
Traditionally, the winner gets around 20% of the total purse. This resulted in the record $3.666 million payday awarded to 2023 Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden. That was an increase of over $500,000, from Marcus Ericsson’s $3.1 million in 2022, and the largest year-over-year increase since the turn of the century.
How Much Will the 2024 Indy 500 Purse Be?
As mentioned, the purse for this year’s Indy 500 has yet to be finalized but if recent trends continue, it’ll be big. The total prize pool is affected by ticket sales, sponsorships, etc. It’s probably safe to assume the 2024 Indy 500 purse will be similar if not exceed last year’s.
