Earlier this week, we learned former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores was a target of the Cleveland Browns for their defensive coordinator job. Now, the Arizona Cardinals have requested an interview with Flores for their vacant head coaching position.
Seeing Flores get another look at a head coaching gig is an excellent development. The Miami Dolphins fired Flores at the end of the 2021 season despite two winning seasons as head coach in 2021 (9-8) and 2020 (10-6); Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and its teams, alleging racial discrimination in hiring practices.
After one season in Pittsburgh as their linebackers coach, the Browns requested to interview Flores for their vacant defensive coordinator position after they fired Joe Woods on Monday.
Flores helped the Dolphins go from one of the worst defenses in football to an above average defense during his time in Miami. From year one (2019) to year two (2020) under Flores the Dolphins went from dead last in the NFL in scoring defense (30.9 points per game) to tied for fifth in the league (21.5).
Flores’ interview with the Cardinals will likely be next week when the NFL schedule allows video and in-person interviews for coaching candidates after the Wild Card Weekend wraps up.
An interesting nugget of information is that the Cardinals have interviewed former player and current VP of pro personnel Adrian Wilson for their GM position this week. Wilson played for Flores in 2013 in New England when Flores was his position coach, so there’s a relationship there.
