The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly hiring Steelers assistant coach Brian Flores as their new defensive coordinator.
Flores helped the Dolphins go from one of the worst defenses in football to an above average defense during his time in Miami. From year one (2019) to year two (2020) under Flores the Dolphins went from dead last in the NFL in scoring defense (30.9 points per game) to tied for fifth in the league (21.5).
Flores was fired in Miami last year despite two winning seasons as head coach. In 2021 (9-8) and 2020 (10-6) Flores posted winning seasons with Miami. After his firing, Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and its teams, alleging racial discrimination in hiring practices.
You can read the full story on the Flores lawsuit, here:
After spending a season in Pittsburgh as an assistant, Flores interviewed for multiple defensive coordinator and head coach positions. As recently as last night, Flores was seen as a finalist for the Cardinals head coach job.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler listed Flores, Mike Kafka, and Lou Anarumo as the three finalists in Arizona. With Flores heading to Minnesota, that leaves Kafka and Anarumo as the two known finalists for the Cardinals’ job.
Either Flores was notified by the Cardinals that he was no longer in the running. Or, Flores thought that a year in Minnesota as their DC would be better than taking the Cardinals job. Which tracks with the reports last week that Kyler Murray’s contract was making candidates hesitant.
Ultimately Flores lands in Minnesota to help turn around a defensive unit that was a sore spot in 2022.
