The NFL has suspended three players indefinitely and two others six games each for violating the league’s gambling policy, according to a press release this morning.
“Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions, and Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders, are suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season.”
Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams of the Lions have been suspended for the team’s first six regular season games of the 2023 season.
According to Ian Rapport, the Detroit Lions have released Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore following the decision to suspend the two indefinitely this morning.
“As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy,” Lions general manager Brad Holmes said in a statement. “These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.”
Jameson Williams was taken by the Lions with the No. 12 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The second-year receiver has been working out with quarterback Jared Goff in recent weeks. Williams was limited to just six games last season due to injury and caught only one pass.
According to ESPN the players disciplined and suspended indefinitely placed bets on NFL games while the other two placed bets on college games from their team facility.
Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill are eligible to participate in organized team activities, minicamp, training camp and the preseason. However, they won’t be available for regular-season games until Week 7.
This news comes just one month after the NFL reinstated Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games while with the Atlanta Falcons.
