Memorial Day is in the books, the kids are on summer break, and summer, the unofficial start to summer, is upon us. But more importantly, the NFL opener is just 100 days away. So, football nuts rejoice. Your favorite obsession is 100 days from being in session. Football writers shall also rejoice because we’re in a rare pocket of the offseason where there isn’t much to write about. The Cleveland Browns were one of the teams I picked as a solid potential landing spot for DeAndre Hopkins. Head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about that on Tuesday.
Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com asked Stefanski today what he would think about a potential Deshaun Watson-DeAndre Hopkins reunion in Cleveland. Stefanski took the safe route with his response. He said he won’t comment on Hopkins and likes what the Browns’ receiver’s room currently looks like.
“I really, really like our wide receiver room,” Stefanski said, (via Mary Kay Cabot). “I love the guys that are in there. Andrew and his crew are always looking at every avenue, so I won’t comment specifically on the player other than to say that I really like our roster.”
As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, the Browns have done a solid job this offseason, with wide receiver being one of the upgraded position groups. Cleveland traded for Elijah Moore, signed Marquise Goodwin, and drafted Cedric Tillman in the third round of the NFL Draft last month. In addition, Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, David Bell, and Anthony Schwartz return from last season.
So, while I wouldn’t rule the Browns out just yet, I would put them on the not-very-likely list of potential landing spots for DeAndre Hopkins. However, Deshaun Watson did say today that he would love to have Hopkins in Cleveland, so, maybe, just maybe.
The Kansas City Chiefs expressed interest in Hopkins earlier this offseason. However, their limited cap space makes it highly unlikely that they will pursue him further. Hopkins’ reported asking price exceeds what they are willing to pay. Additionally, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ quarterback, has expressed his satisfaction with their current offensive weapons. He has referred to the team’s receivers group as “deep” and is content with their current standing.
“We’re deep,” Mahomes said of the receivers. “Usually, you have a good feel for who the guys are going to be, but with this group, it’s like every single guy. You’re like, ‘I can see him making a path for making the team.’ You want that competition. I’m happy with where we’re at.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs will head into camp with Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Skyy Moore atop the depth chart, with second-rounder Rashee Rice and veteran John Ross battling for the No. 4 spot on the wide receiver depth chart.
