If you’ve been watching the Twitters for OTA updates, you’ve undoubtedly seen the clips shared from Buccaneers camp of the “QB battle” between Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield. However, I want to point out that those quotes around QB battle should be read with Dr. Evil’s — from ‘Austin Powers’ — voice because, hooo boy, have the early returns been something else. They’ve been as comical as Dr. Evil’s sinister plans to take over the world in the late-90s/early-00s comedy trilogy.
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a few throws from Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield at Buccaneers OTAs this week:
Kyle Trask said this week that the QB competition between Mayfield and himself should elevate their play. But, eh, these videos are indicative of such. As far as early returns go, anyway.
“Yeah, but that’s the point of sports. We love competition,” Trask said in his press conference. “We’ve been competing our whole lives in this sport, so obviously there is no bad blood or anything like that. We’re just pushing each other and making sure we are always getting better every day.”
Of course, it is May, and the Buccaneers have plenty of time to choose a QB. Trask has been with the Buccaneers for the last two seasons, but Dave Canales — who came from Seattle this offseason — is the new OC, so there’s a new offense to learn. Given Mayfield’s recent experience in learning new NFL offenses, he might have a slight advantage over Trask. However, if I’m being brutally honest, the only thing that I see in the Tampa Bay QB room right now is a pretty decent path to Caleb Williams.

Mitchell Trubisky’s contract details have emerged. According to Mike Florio, Trubsiky’s contract breaks down like this: Trubisky will receive a $6.92M signing bonus and a $1.08M base salary in 2023 with up to $4.25M in incentives available. If Kenny Pickett is healthy the entire season, there’s little to no chance of Trubisky earning those incentives. So, Trubisky got nothing more this season in his recently signed extension. He was already due to make $8 million. Trubisky has also agreed to a team option for 2024 and 2025 at $5.25 million and $6 million, respectively, for an average of $5.625 million.
What does this tell us? It tells us that Trubisky took this deal knowing there was nothing better for him on the open market. Even with teams like the Buccaneers going into the season with Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield as their options. Or, Washington going into the season with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett as their top options. The former No. 2 pick in the draft has realized that his days as a starter are over.
With his new deal, Trubisky’s next shot to become a starting QB in the NFL won’t come until 2026 (barring a trade or a serious injury to Kenny Pickett). So, Trubisky is showing some serious self-awareness here. The former second-overall selection will be 32 in 2025, essentially ending his chances of being a starting QB in the NFL.

Saints owner Mickey Loomis said that Cam Jordan will play for the Saints for as long as he wants. When he’s done, he’ll enter the team’s Ring of Honor. Jordan has played 192 games in a Saints uniform. The 32-year-old defensive end can pass Rickey Jackson (195) and Morten Anderson (196) for the second-most games as a Saint, behind only Drew Brees (228), per PFT.
