Happy Friday! The weekend is here, and I couldn’t be more excited. The forecast is gorgeous, Taylor Swift is in town, and it’s finally starting to feel like summer. We’ll kick off this Friday edition of Bullets in NOLA, where Jameis Winston keeps the faith that he is a starter in the NFL despite sticking around with the Saints.
Winston was expected to become a free agent after New Orleans gave Derek Carr a four-year, $150 million contract in March. Instead, Jameis Winston decided to stay in New Orleans on a reworked deal, taking a pay cut to do so. Even so, Winston believes that he is still a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Winston told ESPN’s Katherine Terrell that he’s grateful for the opportunity to be in New Orleans this season, “However, I know that I’m still a starting quarterback in this league.” Winston said that he has to understand that this is all a process.

Injuries have marred Winston’s time in New Orleans. The veteran quarterback has played just 10 games in three seasons since arriving in New Orleans. When healthy, Winston has a 6-4 record and completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,103 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Winston has a 92.7 passer rating over that stretch. The former No. 1 overall pick believes that the best is yet to come for him.
“There’s some Hall of Famers that made their big break at 30. So I’m still young, I’m still 29, but right now my role is to serve this team in the role that I’m in. And I’m all-in to doing that. Because again, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be able to still wear a Saints uniform or to be in the NFL in general.”
Here’s to hoping that Jameis Winston finds the opportunity that he’s looking for at some point. But given the money that New Orleans gave Derek Carr, it won’t likely be there in 2023.
According to Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle., C.J. Stroud is already impressing in Texans camp. Which is no surprise to me since I had him as the QB1 in the draft class. Just sayin’! DeMeco Ryans said this week that “C.J. is progressing well” and applauded his command of the huddle, among other things. Ryans was impressed with Stroud’s focus and knowledge of the offense’s concepts this week, especially after the long holiday weekend.
Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson said that Stroud is “way, way ahead of the pace” when it comes to his footwork and timing.

Conversely, fellow 2023 draft pick Will Levis had different reviews from Titans OTAs this week.

Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins decided not to use all 10 of their allotted May-June practices this year. So, why wouldn’t you want to use all of the practice sessions you can? “A lot of things factor into it,” McDaniel told reporters. “I think that by and large, players, coaches, people in general, do best when ‘why’ is explained to them. In this particular situation, I think that it is crucial that we have, as convicted, present, deliberate, football players when they’re approaching practice and really recognizing how each opportunity is very crucial to the development of the team.”
So, McDaniel is trying to get the players in, get things done efficiently, and get them on their way. I like it. I’m sure the players appreciate it as well. Good strategy.
