On Friday night, the Carolina Hurricanes visits the New York Islanders with a chance to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Isles had survived to fight another day with a win in Game Five and were now at home, making things tougher on the Canes.
This had been a physical series with scoring being at a premium. And Game Six was no different.
Cal Clutterbuck gave the Isles a 1-0 lead at 9:21 into the first period. That would prove to be the final goal scored by the New York Islanders this season.
Sebastian Aho — the forward for Carolina, not the defenseman by the same name on the Islanders — scored at 9:24 into the third period to tie the game at one. And that’s where the score would remain at the end of 60 minutes. So we went to overtime.
Exactly six minutes into OT, an ugly turnover/nice play turned into an unfortunate goal banking in off Ilya Sorokin’s back leg and the series ended exactly six minutes into the extra session. Paul Stastny proved to be the hero, and there were handshakes.
That wasn’t the best moment of the night provided by the Canes for me, however. Their social team was on point last night, bringing this gem after the game.
