UPDATE: It appears the Flyers will indeed go to a Turner commentator for their president hire, but it will not be Eddie Olczyk. The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting on Wednesday night that Keith Jones will leave the booth to take the job. This always made more sense; he played for the Flyers and calls their games on television.
A report from Frank Seravalli on Wednesday afternoon indicates the Philadelphia Flyers are close to naming a new president of hockey operations. And our friend Eddie Olczyk is one of the two finalists.
Olczyk, 56, is in his first year as the color commentator for the Seattle Kraken and Turner Sports. He’s a beloved member of the Blackhawks family and always will be — even if he goes to Philly. Unfortunately, the Blackhawks moved on from Olczyk in the booth when Pat Foley retired at the end of the 2021-22 season. He made the move to Turner when NBC was no longer a broadcast partner of the NHL.
From Seravalli:
They’re well on their way in Philadelphia and now are nearing the final stages. They cast a pretty wide net, and conducted a lot of different interviews with candidates over the last number of weeks, including John Chyka, Scott Mellanby… Chris Pronger and Doug Wilson received inquiries as well.
But it would be intriguing to see how that would play out considering Edzo played for the Pittsburgh Penguins for a couple years and was also Sidney Crosby’s first head coach. And, you know, the whole “being Philadelphia” part of the city.
His younger brother, Rick, is currently the assistant general manager of the Kraken.
