On Thursday, Governor Kevin Stitt announced his plan to bring sports betting to Oklahoma. His initiative would allow Oklahoma residents to place bets at in-person gaming sites operated by federally recognized tribes and protect tribal investments in physical facilities.
According to Stitt’s office, the plan will prohibit wagers on the individual performance of student-athletes, coaches, referees, prop bets and more. Stitt is currently awaiting insight from the NCAA and the associated conferences in Oklahoma on how they can regulate.
Mobile wagering will be monitored by organizations licensed by the State of Oklahoma and bets may be accepted anywhere in the state, taxed at a 20% rate. Under updated tribal gaming policies, retail wagering can be conducted by federally recognized tribes in person only, taxed at a 15% rate.
The sports betting bill HB 1027 has gained some momentum but there are still some hangups to getting legal Oklahoma sports betting going. It’s likely the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association would regulate sports betting if legal.
