Cubs vs. Brewers Odds

Let’s take a look at the current Cubs vs. Brewers odds at BetRivers.

Friday, July 24, 6:10 PM CDT (Kyle Hendricks vs. Brandon Woodruff)

•   BetRivers Sportsbook: Cubs (-110)/Brewers (-105); Over/Under 8.5 runs

Note: Cubs vs. Brewers odds are subject to change prior to game time. These odds are as off 2:15 CDT.

There’s been some significant line movement leading up to first pitch. Earlier this week, the Cubs were as much as a -131 favorite, but, clearly, the line is coming back to the Brewers. Meanwhile, the over/under for this early evening contest is set at 8.5 (over -122/under +102).

Cubs vs. Brewers Prediction and Pick

The Pitching Matchup

After Jon Lester got the last three Opening Day starts, Cubs manager David Ross announced it will be Kyle Hendricks who gets the call this year. Hendricks, who went 11-10 with a 3.46 ERA last season, was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two starts against Milwaukee a season ago. Over the last two seasons, the Cubs are 18-12 as favorites when Hendricks starts. More specifically, they were 8-5 a year ago.

For Milwaukee, Brandon Woodruff, who was 11-3 with a 3.62 ERA in 22 starts last season, gets the call. Woodruff was roughed up in his lone start against the Cubs last season, yielding four earned runs in only four innings of work. Meanwhile, the Brewers are 11-4 on the road in Woodruff starts since the start of the 2017 season. This includes a perfect 6-0 as road underdogs in his starts.

Notes to Know

Here are some notes to consider as you evaluate the Cubs vs. Brewers odds and make your picks.

•   Last season, home favorites that were priced between -100 and -120 were 153-139. However, this record was not profitable, losing bettors $242. The Cubs, meanwhile, were 16-10 in this exact price range overall and a profitable 6-3 at home.

•   The Cubs are 28-19 as a home favorite against the Brewers dating back to the 2015 season, which has been an unprofitable -$268. However, they were 6-3 against them as a home favorite a year ago ($172).

•   Last season, Chicago was 22-11 in games at Wrigley Field that started after 5 pm local time. Meanwhile, dating back to 2016, the Cubs are an astounding 88-43 (.627 winning percentage) as a favorite in games that start after 5 pm local time. The point here is that Chicago has been extremely successful in early evening and standard night starts.

Cubs vs. Brewers Pick

I have some concerns about this line trending toward Milwaukee, essentially leaving it as a pick’em just a few hours before first pitch. That is one red flag. My other primary concern is that Brandon Woodruff is one of the game’s most underrated pitchers, one that I believe may be on the verge of a breakout season (albeit a shortened one). As noted above, the Brewers are a perfect 6-0 as a road underdog when he starts.

Certainly, I’d like to take the Cubs in this spot. It’s Opening Day at Wrigley Field, I mean, it’s a tough sell to say back Milwaukee in this one. I do, however, have my concerns. For that reason, let’s focus our attention elsewhere. You can grab Kyle Hendricks to go OVER 4.5 strikeouts at +120 odds. And, if you’re looking for a long shot play, let’s try Jason Heyward to homer at +1200.
