The twists and turns of the Illinois online sports betting story continue as it now appears likely that today is the last day to register online for mobile (and computer) betting for 18 months.
Multiple sources have confirmed to us that Executive Order 2020-41, which temporarily permitted Illinois bettors to register online for mobile sportsbooks, is set to expire at 11:59 tonight. As a practical matter, that means come tomorrow, bettors must physically appear at an Illinois sportsbook retail location to sign up for online sports betting.
Currently, BetRivers is the only app currently taking action in Illinois. You have until tonight to sign up (and get a $250 first deposit match) by clicking this link, unless you want to go to a casino to do it.
And if you’re in and around Chicago and don’t want to make a four-plus hour trip to Casino Queen to register in-person for DraftKings at Casino Queen Sportsbook (which is expected to launch in the coming days), you might want click here to skip the trip (and get a $100 free bet).
Time May Be Running Out To Register Online in Illinois
Initial Illinois sports betting law required that bettors needed to register in-person in order to bet online. However, following coronavirus shutdowns, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed Executive Order 2020-41, temporarily allowing for online sportsbook registrations. However, that temporary order expires tonight.
Late Friday night, Executive Order 2020-48 extended a number of emergency declarations, but not the one that lifted the in-person registration requirement for sportbsooks.
This means that you will no longer be able to register for Illinois online sports betting via the online registration process after 11:59 p.m. tonight. Starting Monday, July 27, you will be required to physically appear at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines to sign up for BetRivers. Again, you can click this link and save yourself the trip.
Meanwhile, DraftKings Sportsbook Illinois is expected to launch in the coming days. After today, you will be required to take a trip to Casino Queen in East St. Louis to get the app. We strongly recommended skipping that excursion, particularly if you live in Chicago, given it’s over four hours away.
It appears you can bypass that trip by preregistering with DraftKings Sportsbook Illinois by clicking right here .
In both cases, those who sign up online will have full accessibility to mobile and computer online sports betting, even after the online registration process expires tonight. Essentially, this is a game of beat the clock.
Another Turn In Illinois Sports Betting
Of course, given the turbulence of the Illinois online sports betting market since its March launch, it does remain possible that the Illinois Gaming Board and/or Governor Pritzker again change the regulations. But for now, it looks like today is the final day to register online.
It’s been a wild start to sports betting in Illinois. After Rivers Casino launched in early March, it was shutdown only a couple of days later in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. With the new market at a standstill, things began to pick up in June when the IGB issued its first online licenses. BetRivers, operated by Rush Street Gaming, was the first to go live in Illinois.
It is expected in the coming days that DraftKings Sportsbook Illinois will join the party. However, with the online registration process set to expire tonight, it will require an in-person trip to a retail location in order to register. That’s why for the sake of convenience today is the day to register.
Today is the last day to sign up online for BetRivers and get a $250 match. Do it by clicking this link.
