Bears vs. Lions Pick, Score Prediction: A Long Time Coming

Sports Betting

After five straight losses, the Bears’ fading postseason hopes are now on life support. If this team has any fight, any desire to play postseason football, or any of the pride Matt Nagy spoke of after his team’s latest embarrassment last Sunday, it must show up this week. Fortunately for Nagy, the scheduling gods bring forth the 4-7 Lions, a team he is a perfect 5-0 against since becoming a head coach. Notably, this matchup marks the first game for Detroit since firing head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn.

Can the Bears finally stop the bleeding and at least temporarily save their season, or will the Lions rally post-Patricia and deal a deathblow to their division rival? Let’s get into it with our Bears vs. Lions picks and predictions for this Week 13 matchup.

Bears vs. Lions Odds

It has been awhile, that’s for sure. No, I’m not talking about how it has been awhile since the Bears last won a football game (48 days), I’m talking about it being awhile since the Bears have been favored in a football game.

The Bears enter this Week 13 matchup as a favorite for the first time since Week 2 against the Giants. Seriously. The Bears were the underdog in their previous nine contests leading up to this week. Crazy.

Despite a lengthy run as an underdog, it’s unsurprising Chicago is favored this week. After all, the Bears have the superior record, they’re at home, and they already beat the Lions earlier this season by a 27-23 margin in Detroit back in Week 1. Plus, the Lions are a dumpster fire. Since evening its record at 3-3, Detroit has lost four of its last five contests and has often been uncompetitive in the process.

Still, oddsmakers at top apps including  DraftKings Sportsbook have the Bears as a fairly short three-point favorite in this game, which speaks volumes about their continued lack of believe in this team.

Let’s take a look at the current Bears-Lions odds on the Illinois market:

Bears+10 (-110)+400O 47.5
Saints-10 (-110)-500U 47.5

Earlier in the week, the Bears were favored by as many as 4.5 points, but oddsmakers quickly adjusted and dropped this to a field goal spread. Meanwhile, there’s been a slight drop in the total from 45 to 44.5 points.

While the Bears’ NFC North title aspirations are all but gone following a blowout loss at Green Bay last week, they do remain on the fringe of playoff contention. Be sure to check out the Bears 2020 playoff odds.

Bears vs. Lions Betting Pick, Prediction

Let’s now turn to our Bears vs. Lions betting picks and score prediction for Week 13.

There are plenty of ways to describe the Bears’ 41-25 blowout loss last week — embarrassing, pathetic, and telling among them.

But! But it wasn’t all terrible. Sure, Mitchell Trubisky turned the football over three times, but he did throw for three scores. Meanwhile, David Montgomery eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the ground at nine yards per carry and added another 40 yards receiving. Allen Robinson also hauled in pair of touchdowns. While the loss won’t be secured in the vault as a franchise classic, these were tangible signs of life for a long lifeless offense.

On the opposite side, the Lions are coming off a game in which they allowed Deshaun Watson to complete 17 of 25 pass attempts for 317 yards and four touchdowns on his way to producing 150.4 quarterback rating. Trubisky isn’t Watson (you may have heard), but the fact remains he should have plenty of opportunities to move the ball through the air against a Detroit defense allowing the NFL’s seventh-most passing yards per game (262.8).

Injury Outlook

Both teams have a lengthy injury report this week, though several players currently listed are expected to play.

For Chicago, Allen Robinson (knee) is questionable but should play. Other notable players who are questionable include linebacker Khalil Mack (back), defensive tackle Akiem Hicks (hamstring), left tackle Charles Leno Jr. (toe) and right tackle Germain Ifedi (calf).

Hicks is one to watch. The Bears remain hopeful he will return this week, and his absence was felt against the Packers offense as the group had its way with an overmatched Chicago defensive front.

For Detroit, Kenny Golladay (hip), defensive end Da’Shawn Hand (groin) and cornerback Jeff Okudah are all out. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is dealing with a thumb issue but is likely to play.

Bears vs. Lions Betting Trends

Road underdogs of 6.5 points or less that are coming off a season in which they won between 0-6 games are 84-57-1 ATS. Lots of variables with this trend, sure, but this is a large sample size over a 17-season period.

The Lions have lost 13 of their last 14 NFC North games and have covered just four of those contests, which is obviously terrible. However, the Bears have failed to cover in seven of their last eight games as a favorite, including their Week 2 ATS loss against the Giants.

Favorites that have lost five straight games are just 10-18 ATS overall, but such teams are 5-4 ATS in December.

Bears-Lions Total

The under has cashed in 7 of the Bears’ 11 games this season. The over has hit in 7 of the Lions’ 11 contests.

Generally speaking, the under is the right side in late-season division contests. In Week 11 or later, the under is 199-123-4 in division games with a total set at 44.5 points or higher. It’s 34-17-1 when set at 44.5-45 points.

Bears vs. Lions Prediction

This line sort of stinks a little bit. Crazy as it sounds, I loved the Bears as a 4.5-point favorite. That’s a strong line for a team on a five-game losing streak, even if it comes against an opponent that just cleaned out its head coach and general manager. After dipping to -3, now I’m not quite as sure. That type of movement sounds some alarms from this perspective. Then again, who are the Trubisky-led Bears to lay more than a field goal to any team right now?

As of Saturday morning, the public is backing the Bears at DraftKings Sportsbook with 53% of spread bets and 63% of the handle on Chicago.

Ultimately, I think the Bears are due for a win, so I’ll roll the dice and take them to win and cover -3.

Bears vs. Lions Pick

I’m taking the Bears -3.

I also love them to win by 1-13 points at FanDuel Sportsbook with a +145 payout.
