Blackhawks vs Lightning Betting Preview (January 15th, 2021)

Sports Betting

It’s the second game of the season opening series between the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks at Amalie Arena on Friday night.

Let’s take at how to play this one in our Blackhawks vs. Lightning betting preview with odds, picks and predictions.

Blackhawks vs. Lightning Betting Preview

On Wednesday night, the Tampa Bay Lightning wasted no time as they began the defense of their championship on home ice with a 5-1 blowout victory against these same Blackhawks.

Tampa scored three goals late in the first period, taking advantage of numerous open lane chances that the Hawks defense were allowing in their zone. The Bolts dominated by picking up the rebounds that Hawks goaltender Malcolm Subban continued to yield throughout the contest. The young netminder was caught out of position in four of the five goals that flew past him.

Chicago was able to put some pressure on Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevisky during the second period, and late in the contest with around five minutes left in regulation, center Dylan Strome was able to snap the shutout bid on a power play tally.

Overall, Tampa Bay absolutely dominated the Blackhawks in all phases of play, and after a rotten outing by Subban, all points indicate that we will see Colin Delia make the start in net tonight for Chicago.

Bets We Like With a Blackhawks Win

Patrick Kane Shots on Goal (OVER 3.5 -118, DraftKings)

In order for the Hawks to even have a shot at winning this contest tonight, Patrick Kane is going to have to get into “Showtime” mode, as he likes to call it, and generate more than just four shots on net which is the total he was held to on Wednesday night. In 20 career regular season games against the Lightning, Kane has 8 goals and 14 assists, with an extra goal and two assists from the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. With the absences of Jonathan Toews and Kirby Dach, it’s up to #88 to be the dangerous scoring threat more now than ever in his illustrious 14-year career.

Bets We Like With a Lightning Win

Lightning to Win in Regulation (-175, DraftKings)

NOTE: This play is listed under different names depending on your sportsbook of choice. Some call this a 60-minute line, others a 3-way line or regulation line.

This series has been completely one-sided in favor of Tampa Bay for several years now. Since the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, the Lightning have won 8 of their last 11 meetings against the Blackhawks, with six of those victories coming in regulation. The talent edge this year is in favor of the Lightning more than it has been in over a decade, and they should be able to pick up another win inside of 60 minutes.

Bets We Like Independent of the Outcome

First Period OVER 2 (+118, DraftKings)

Over the last three NHL Seasons, no proposition wager has been hotter amongst bettors than the first period over trend, and the two clubs who led the path with that prop are meeting up here once again tonight.

Note the change we’ve seen here from 1.5 goals last game to two goals for tonight. After a late explosion of three Tampa Bay goals in the opening frame of Wednesday’s showdown, many books have adjusted their number a half-goal upward. Last season, the Blackhawks were involved in 51 out of 70 contests that had two or more goals in the first period, while the Lightning played in 55 of 70 games with two or more goals scored within the first 20 minutes of play.

Blackhawks vs. Lightning Prediction

I expect a more exuberant effort from Chicago tonight to start this game, but eventually, the skill and speed of Tampa Bay will take over and they should make light work of the Blackhawks once again in a 5-3 victory to advance to 2-0-0 on the early portion of the season.
