The Chicago Blackhawks open up a six-game road trip tonight with the first of two contests in the Motor City against the Detroit Red Wings.
Let’s take a look at this Central Division showdown on February 15, 2021 in our Blackhawks vs. Red Wings betting preview with odds, picks & predictions
Red Wings vs. Blackhawks Betting Pick
The surprising Blackhawks enter this contest winners of five of their last seven games, the latest of which was a 3-2 overtime victory at home over Columbus that came on a game-winning goal by Alex DeBrincat.

Goalie Kevin Lankinen has six wins on his record, putting him atop all rookie netminders thus far. His play has been key in stabilizing what was considered a potential weakness for this team at the start of the season.
As for Detroit, the Red Wings picked up a 4-2 win over Nashville on Saturday to end their own six-game road trip. They now return home, where they have lost four of their last six contests.
Simply put, Chicago has won 9 of their last 12 games against Detroits and is playing much better hockey ahead of this contest.

Bets We Like With a Red Wings Win
Red Wings Team Total OVER 2.5 Goals (-115, DraftKings)
In order for Detroit to earn a victory here, they will have to get things rolling offensively. The Red Wings’ formula isn’t exactly a revelation — score and win. Detroit has scored three or more goals in all four wins this season and with the Blackhawks’ still having some lapses defensively, they could get to that mark in this contest, especially if Lankinen is out and backup Malcolm Subban gets the start in net. Bets We Like With a Blackhawks Win
Blackhawks to Score First and Win the Game (YES +125, Draftkings)
Chicago is 4-0-1 this season when scoring first in a contest, while Detroit is 1-6-1 when conceding the first goal of a game. While the first goal doesn’t generally dictate the game outcome so strongly, these two teams are first-goal dependent.
The Blackhawks will look to start off this road trip with energy and speed and against a Red Wings club that is back from the road. A popular hockey betting theory is that teams returning home off of lengthy road trips are susceptible to coming out flat.
I expect that to be the case for the Red Wings tonight.
Bets We Like Independent of the Outcome
Full Game UNDER 5.5 Goals (-113, DraftKings)
Both clubs have been involved in their fair share of low-scoring games as of late. Detroit has played four of its last six games to the under, while Chicago has stayed under in three of its last four.
Blackhawks vs. Red Wings Prediction
Chicago is playing some very solid hockey lately, while the Red Wings are still struggling at both ends of the ice.
Situationally, the return home off of a long road trip isn’t a great spot for NHL teams, so I’ll happily play that spot against a below average squad. Detroit is returning off of a 2-4 road trip, and I don’t expect things to get better tonight. I’ll grab the Blackhawks to pick up a 3-1 victory.
