March Madness Betting Trends to Know
When it comes to betting on March Madness, sports fans know the odds often don’t tell the full story.
Each year, Cinderella stories are written, improbable upsets occur, and wild finishes are common — particularly during the first round.
With that said, we’ve compiled some quick betting trends to be aware of before checking out the 2021 NCAA Tournament odds and filling out your brackets.
- No. 1 seeds are a good bet to advance, but they’re not always a great bet to cover. In NCAA Tournament history, the No. 1 seed is 135-1 straight up in the first round. The lone exception was UMBC’s shocking 2018 victory over top-ranked Virginia. Over the last 15 tournaments, No. 1 seeds are 59-1 in the first round, but they are just 30-29-1 ATS.
- During that time frame, when No. 1 sees are favored by 20+ points, they are just 21-27 ATS.
- What about the always popular No. 12 upsets in the first round? Bettors love to back the underdog in the 12/5 matchup and with good reason. No. 12 seeds are 33-25-2 ATS over the last 15 NCAA Tournaments. When a No. 12 seed is a six-point underdog or less, they are 24-14-1 ATS, an outstanding 63.2% cover rate.
- The No. 9 vs. No. 8 matchup is always one of the most intriguing on the board, so let’s take a look at some quick notes here. Over the last 15 tournaments, No. 9 seeds are 29-28-3 ATS, demonstrating the overall coin flip nature of these matchups. It’s worth noting, however, that when the No. 9 seed has been a betting underdog, it has been substantially more profitable. Consider this — underdog No. 9 seeds are 20-13-1 ATS in the first round of the tournament. They are just 9-15-1 ATS as a favorite.
