Sometimes the best questions aren’t asked by grizzled reporters. And as is often the case, the best (and most honest) answers don’t come from someone in front of a crowded press briefing.
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky got a chance to speak at the Peoria Journal Star’s Best of Preps Gala earlier in the week. Trubisky shared some insight on developing a positive attitude on his way to getting where he is today, but his most memorable quote might have come in response to something asked by a cross country student-athlete from Elmwood High School named Eli.
Trubisky was asked if he thought the Bears could make the playoffs in 2018. It’s a fair question worth asking. The Bears have a new coach and a ton of new offensive weapons which have raised expectations for the second-year quarterback. Trubisky chose his words carefully, but delivered an honest answer.
“One of the things I learned early on was don’t make any predictions and don’t give out any guarantees. Besides the fact that I can promise you we’re going to give you our best effort on the field, I’m very excited about this year and optimistic about what we can do. But I’m just not allowed to make any guarantees,” Trubisky said in a video shared by the Peoria Journal Star. “But I can promise you if you come to Bears games, you’re going to have a lot of fun and we’re going to have a good team this year.”
Alright, so Trubisky is no Joe Namath. The Bears don’t need him to be. Not yet, anyway.
So while the Bears’ quarterback pulled up short of making a bold prediction that would count as bulletin-board material throughout the league, Trubisky still came away sounding confident that the product on the field would be better than what it was last year. For now, that sounds good to me.
