For the most part, the atmosphere at the Pro Bowl Games practice at Allegiant Stadium today was relaxed and fun. That was until Raiders running back Josh Jacobs was asked about the potential of being tagged by the Raiders if they can’t come to terms on an agreement on an extension.
Jacobs said that as of today, he and the Raiders haven’t spoke about a new contract. And while he does expect those conversations to begin next week, it doesn’t sound like he’s too thrilled with what happens if they can’t come to terms.
The star running back, whom the Raiders drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft*, is representing the Raiders and the AFC at this weekend’s Pro Bowl Games after rushing for a league-high 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.
As such, PFF has him ranked as the 11th best free agent available this offseason, finishing first in PFF’s running back grades (91.9 rushing grade). They’re projecting a one-year, $10.09 million deal.
The Raiders have plenty to figure out in the coming weeks. For example, the deadline to trade or release Derek Carr before his contract becomes fully guaranteed is just 11 days away.
And on that note, the Raiders may be a landing spot for a veteran like Aaron Rodgers this offseason.
Whether or not the Raiders will replace Carr with a rookie in the draft or a veteran backup remains to be seen. Still, losing your star running back in free agency seems like a bad idea. But, so as creating a holdout situation after a franchise tag seems just as detrimental.
*The Raiders used the the 24th overall pick (received from the Bears in the Khalil Mack trade) to select Jacobs.
