This Day in Super Bowl History: Patriots Beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX

The Pro Bowl is in the books and it’s all eyes on Super Bowl week here at Bleacher Nation NFL. There were two Super Bowls to take place on February 6. Before the Packers beat the Steelers in 2011, the Patriots took on the Eagles, who will be competing in this year’s Super Bowl.

Ironically enough, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was the Eagles head coach in Super Bowl XXXIX when the Patriots took on the Eagles in 2005.

The Patriots had prime Tom Brady and an again but still effective Corey Dillon that season. Rodeny Harrison, Adam Vinatieri, and Mike Vrabel were other noteworthy Patriots on this roster.

The Eagles had Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens leading their offensive attack.

This was actually the game where legend had it, Donovan McNabb puked during the game on the field. Of course, McNabb denied that claim in years later.

After a scoreless first quarter, McNabb and Brady traded touchdown passes in the first quarter. Then again in the third quarter to make it 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter. A Corey Dillon touchdown and a Vinatieri field goal gave the Patriots a 24-10 lead in the fourth quarter.

But the Eagles would strike back with a touchdown to cut the New England lead to three with under two minutes to play. Unfortunately for Andy Reid, this Patriots would win the first New England-Philadelphia game Super Bowl. We know that Philadelphia would have the last laugh in recent years.

You can watch the full game here on YouTube.
