Ken Griffey, Jr. and Mike Piazza Are Hall of Famers, Sammy Sosa Stays on Ballot

baseball hall of fameIt’s official: the 2016 Hall of Fame Class will include 2 new members: Ken Griffey, Jr. and Mike Piazza. Just about everyone expected Ken Griffey, Jr., but he did fail to reach the elusive unanimous decision (thanks to three voters). Mike Piazza and Trevor Hoffman felt like they had good chances, but the latter came up 8% short. Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines were the two closest misses.

For the rest, only those that received at least 5% of the vote are allowed to remain on the ballot for 2016. That means that 13 players will not be returning next year.* For those that did receive at least 5% of the vote, they may remain on the ballot for a total of 10 years. This is down from the previous rule of 15 years.

Once again, Sammy Sosa did receive more than 5% of the vote – 7% to be exact – and will stay on the ballot for 2017.

The full list of vote tallies and background information from the BBWAA:

[adinserter block=”1″]Notable:

  • Ken Griffey Jr.’s 99.32% of the vote is a new record, surprising former leader Tom Seaver, who acquired 98.8% of the vote in 1992.
  • Mike Piazza, who polled at 69.9% last year (missing the Hall of Fame by just 28 votes) is the only other inductee and finished with 83.0% of the vote. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he was a swell dude. Consider me happy to see him make it.
  • Jeff Bagwell came up just short in his sixth year on the ballot, with 71.6% of the vote. He did increase by about 15% over last year and will have four more tries to make it.
  • Also increasing by about 15% is Tim Raines, who finished with 307 total votes (69.8%). Next year is his final on the ballot.
  • Alleged PED users Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds both increased by about 8%, but failed to reach the threshold. Both Bonds (44.3%) and Clemens (45.2%) have six more chances to make it in.
  • This was Allen Trammel and Mark McGwire’s last chance to make the Hall, and both failed to reach the 75.0% threshold. Both will drop of the ballot for 2017.
  • Lee Smith, who finished with 34.1% of the vote, has one more year (his fifteenth – he was grandfathered in along with the new rule) to make the Hall.
  • *[Brett: Pretty ridiculous that Jim Edmonds is a one-and-done. Give his career a closer look. Voters did not.]
