One of the less appreciated amazing plays in baseball is the difficult infield flip to a bag. Shortstops, second baseman and first baseman make the plays most often, but despite the difficulty, they’re not always highlight reel ready.
Sometimes, though, these flips can be so impressive that they make the cut. This Mark Buehrle flip to first base, for example, is one such play, and it’s probably one of the best plays in the last decade:
So much happens in such little time, but you have to tip your cap to Buehrle. After the ball ricochets off his foot, he doesn’t give up and continues on after it. Then, by some miracle, he gloves the ball, tosses it backwards between his legs in a perfect move to first base (where it’s caught barehanded) and the runner is out.
Fantastic play. Memorable play. I’m going to watch it again.
