Team Puerto Rico Just Won on a Mercy Rule Walk-Off, Which Created a Perfect Game (Yup, That’s Kinda Weird)

Baseball Is Fun

When is a Perfect Game simultaneously perfect but also maybe not a game?

In the World Baseball Classic, where there is a mercy rule. Very sorry, Team Israel, because you’re now on the wrong side of history.

Tonight, Team Puerto Rico combined to throw a perfect game against Team Israel, but the game lasted only 8.0 innings because of the mercy rule. And to make things just a little more funky and fun, it came on a walk-off:

Jose De Leon, Yacksel Rios, Edwin Diaz, and Duane Underwood Jr. combined for the perfecto, and let’s just go ahead and assume the team would’ve put together a perfect 9th inning to finish things off properly, if not for the mercy rule.
