Offseason Program Storylines, 49ers Eying ‘D’ Help In Draft, and Other Bullets

The Chicago Bears were among the last teams to start their offseason training program.

Clearly, we’re saving the best for last. Right?

  • Over at WGN Radio, Adam Hoge highlights 10 of the most important storylines as the Bears get their offseason workout program started. Among them is the progress of GM Ryan Pace’s other first-round pick, wide receiver Kevin White. With two surgeries under his belt, White will look to shed the injury-prone label with a productive season. That starts with making it out of the offseason workout program healthy. White isn’t the only Bears player hoping to shake the injury bug in 2017. The health of players such as McPhee, Young, Houston, tight end Zach Miller, and receiver Markus Wheaton will be monitored closely.
  • Don’t forget about the new coaches who joined John Fox’s staff this offseason. Five new position coaches were added to the staff this offseason, including three (offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn, running backs coach Curtis Modkins, and assistant defensive backs coach Roy Anderson) who helped out at the Senior Bowl. It’s not that turnover isn’t common among the assistant coaching ranks, but there is something to be said about the number of coaches who voluntarily left and how that lines up with the fact that Fox has only one more year left on his contract after 2017.
  • Beyond players and coaches getting back to work, the underlying message with regards to the start of the offseason workout program is simple. Stay healthy. The Bears had 19 players finish on injured reserve in 2016, and Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times writes about how maintaining health is priority, revising some of the team’s training program in an attempt to avoid smaller injuries.
  • As was the case with yesterday’s “trade down” and “how about a QB” reports, it’s important to to keep your eyes on the San Francisco 49ers’ plans in the first round for obvious reasons:
  • The Bears have long been tied to potentially drafting Adams with the third pick, but it’s not as if the 49ers’ secondary was stocked with game changers. And that’s where Adams would fit in. San Francisco’s new GM John Lynch was a standout Pro Bowler for some of the best defensive units in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history. So, if anyone understands the value of having a premier safety lined up in the secondary, it’s probably Lynch.
  • Adrian Peterson, 32, is still looking for his next team, and is reportedly willing to play next year for $5 million or less.
  • Texans quarterback Tom Savage says it will be a “peaceful” quarterback room this year, which, of course, comes after the Texans were able to dump disastrous free agent signing Brock Osweiler.
  • Akiem Hicks is muscular:
