*Another* new quarterback!?!?
I kid. This isn’t quite signing Mike Glennon for $43.5 million or trading up to draft Mitch Trubisky.
Montana quarterback Brady Gustafson confirms reports that he received an invitation from the Bears to attend the team’s three-day rookie mini-camp, starting May 11. The tryout invitation is not yet official and he’s awaiting full details from the team.
Gustafson checks in at 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, and averaged 309.4 passing yards per game last season – the sixth highest total in college football. He led Montana for two seasons, and was among the top performers in the FCS. There was a time when pundits wondered whether he was “the next Carson Wentz,” who famously ascended from the FCS ranks to be selected second overall in 2016 by the Philadelphia Eagles.
By the time the 2016 season had concluded, though, Gustafson’s stock had settled more into the range you’d expect for the typical FCS quarterback, and he was undrafted.
At the rookie mini camp, Gustafson will have a few days to show what he can do, and try to land an undrafted free agent contract, at which point he’d land a spot on the Bears’ 90-man offseason roster, but would still have to compete to stick around after that.
The Bears have four quarterbacks under contract, including Mark Sanchez and Connor Shaw, in addition to Glennon and Trubisky.
