The New York Giants are getting a head start on their rebuilding project.
Head Coach Ben McAdoo (via Jay Glazer of FOX Sports) and General Manager Jerry Reese (via Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com) were fired Monday, less than 24 hours after falling to the Oakland Raiders by a 24-17 score.
The loss dropped the Giants to 2-10 on the season, keeping them in contention for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft – though, that’s not quite where the team envisioned itself after finishing 2016 with an 11-5 record and adding Brandon Marshall (among others) to the group of offensive playmakers.
Reese had been the team’s GM since 2007 when he replaced Ernie Accorsi (there goes that name again…). He was on board for both of the team’s Super Bowl wins against the New England Patriots and made key draft picks including Odell Beckham, Landon Collins, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Mario Manningham, among others.
McAdoo joined the Giants in 2014 as the team’s offensive coordinator under Tom Coughlin. Prior to that, he was with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2013 serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach (2012-13) and tight ends coach (2006-11). He also coached for the San Francisco 49ers (offensive line coach, offensive quality control coordinator) in 2005 and New Orleans Saints (offensive quality control coordinator) in 2004.
Less than one year after leading the Giants into the playoffs, McAdoo became the first coach in franchise history to be fired in-season since 1976.
You’re up, Bears.
