Fields Talks New ‘Do, Some Arlington Deets, A-Rob Debut Dud, and Other Bears Bullets

Are you ready for some football?

  • It’s almost here:
  • There was so much to reel in from the Bears’ town hall meeting in Arlington Heights. The Chicago Tribune (Kubzansky and McCroppin), Sun-Times (Armentrout and Lieser), and Noah Asimov (Block Club Chicago), and ESPN (Courtney Cronin) had write-ups I found informative while reading this morning. We had lots of tweets at BN Bears. And we had Patrick chipping in with the tweets while also in attendance with me.
  • While the Bears were sharing some of their plans regarding their exodus to Arlington Heights, the NFL had the audacity to play its season-opener featuring the reigning Super Bowl champs and a team many believe is a favorite to win the division. The Bills put in work in a 31-10 win against the Rams, with Josh Allen and friends making that vaunted Super Bowl winning Rams defense look a step slower than you’d expect. Ope! Maybe the Bills are for real this year?
  • If Josh Allen does this (297 passing yards, 3 TD + 56 rush yards, 1 TD) all year long, he’ll win this year’s MVP award. And highlights like this will be aplenty:
  • Allen Robinson II made his Rams debut last night. And here are the highlights:
  • This isn’t the debut Robinson had in mind when he signed a multi-year deal with Los Angeles in the offseason. One catch and just two total targets. Sheesh. It’s not like I was expecting A-Rob to out-rank Cooper Kupp in the pecking order. But tight end Tyler Higbee (11 targets), receiver Ben Skowronek (6), and running back Darrell Henderson (5) got more looks than Robinson. I’m not sure you can blame Matthew Stafford, though. The gang on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football had an informational breakdown on how Robinson was creating minimal separation. And while Robinson has a reputation for coming down with contested catches, he’s probably going to have to earn that trust from Stafford before he gets a bunch of those thrown his way.
  • I suppose it could’ve been worse for Robinson. Rams RB Cam Akers saw just 3 carries and gained 0 yards for his efforts. In hindsight, I probably should’ve taken any running back who wasn’t Akers. Whoops!
  • Eek!
  • It’s a new year for the Bears — and a new look for Justin Fields. QB1 discusses his new ‘do and more with Lauren Screeden of the Bears:
  • Sigh. Velus Jones Jr. came up as a “DNP” at Bears practice when the team shared Thursday’s injury report. I don’t love that development. Jones figured to get a fair amount of snaps as a rookie receiver and Chicago could use as much help as it can get at that particular position. But let’s not forget about the potential contributions in the return game. Jones is a player you want to get the ball to in space often. A smart offensive play-caller would cook up some schemed looks to get him open to leverage that speed. Especially early in games … and early in the season when there isn’t a ton of pro tape on him. In the end, we’ll see what Friday’s injury report update holds. I think it will tell us a lot more than the first two days.
  • One thing I want to points out about these injury reports is that we’re not wholly sure what these designations mean for this group of coaches. After four years of going through it, we knew what it meant during the Nagy era when certain players were given certain designations. But we don’t know what it means when it’s Matt Eberflus and his staff. In other words, this is going to be a learning experience for all of us.
  • On the other side of the field, the Niners are dealing with a high-profile injury of their own:
  • George Kittle being out is one of those “I’ll believe it when I see it” things. The guy is a gamer. And you know that the life-long Bears fan in Kittle wants to play at Soldier Field. So we’ll have a better idea of the severity of the groin injury if Kittle doesn’t play. And if it is *THAT* severe, I can see 49ers keeping Kittle from taking the trip. I don’t care that the Niners will be on a cozy jet with ample leg room. That flight from San Francisco is a long and uncomfortable one. And it’s not one I imagine someone wants to take if they’re dealing with a serious groin injury.
  • Long snapper Pat Scales shows what veteran leadership looks like, my frents:
  • Just when the White Sox were turning it around, the Dark Lord of the Sith manager is set to return:
  • Billy Donovan has his work cut out for him as he attempts to hold things together while Lonzo Ball is out of action:
  • As the Blackhawks turn over a new leaf, perhaps we’ll see some young players step into the spotlight in a major way:
