Justin Fields is Taking Full Ownership of the Chicago Bears Offense

It’s not as if you were needing a reminder, but here’s one anyway: The Chicago Bears are Justin Fields’ team. Training camp begins next week. And after two offseasons featuring sweeping changes throughout the front office, coaching staff, and on-field personnel (via free agency and NFL Draft), Fields remains a constant in a place where variables have been changing. Yes, things can change quickly in the NFL. And it is possible that we could be singing a different tune at this time next year. But we can cross that bridge when we get to it (and if we get to it).

For now, this is Justin Fields’ team. And if you were looking for any more evidence to support it, just check out how he is taking ownership of the Bears’ offense:

There is so much that I love about the tweet above. So much so that I want to itemize it all:

  • Fields says he is working to make it “his offense” and I’m over the moon about it. Maybe that’s just the summer air talking. Or perhaps we’re seeing the mesh point between Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy tailoring the offense to Fields’ skillset and Fields taking ownership of said offense. We saw what it looks like when a play-caller tries to make fetch happen with a scheme that doesn’t fit his QB. I’m looking forward to seeing what it is like when the QB and OC are on the same page.
  • Newfound comfort in the system? Be still my beating heart. At this time last year, the offense was a total unknown. And while Fields and Darnell Mooney were burning the midnight oil to learn it, things didn’t click until a month or so into the season. Being comfortable in the scheme might seem like a small thing, but it isn’t. That Fields is openly discussing his comfort levels in the offense feels like a good thing.
  • Speaking of Mooney, that he and Chase Claypool were among the group of receivers is music to my ears. These are two key cogs in the Bears’ offense who both missed time last year due to injuries. And with the recovery process spilling into 2023, it limited what Fields could do with these two during offseason training periods and minicamps. So we should take Fields working with Mooney and Claypool as evidence that things are looking up on the health front. Hopefully, more positive signs are ahead when they show up to training camp next week.

    And then, there is this:

There are few things that make my soul feel better than seeing a pro athlete interacting with their youngest fans. Seeing these players giving back to the community — whether it is in the form of doing a camp, taking some photo ops, signing some autographs, or something else — is undeniably wonderful to see. No, it doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of football happenings. But it helps put things in perspective. And it makes me want things to work out with Fields and the Bears that much more.

The Bears will open up Halas Hall for the first open training camp practice one week from tomorrow. From there, Fields and friends will take their first steps into a larger football world. It is wild to think about how close we are to football. Particularly after the offseason we’ve had. Think about how far we’ve come since January. It was only 192 days ago when we were actively rooting on the Houston Texans to beat the Indianapolis Colts so the Chicago Bears could land the No. 1 overall pick. We, as a fan base, have been through so much since that moment.

Soon, the time for looking back will be over. And we’ll be looking ahead to the future — with Justin Fields under center. For how long? Well, that’s for Fields to answer with his play. We’ll watch it begin again starting next week.
