It has been a chaotic morning for the Chicago Bears at Halas Hall, and Matt Eberflus’ non-answer when asked about an update regarding Defensive Coordinator Alan Williams only adds to the calamity.
In summary, this is what went down this morning at Halas Hall:
Halas Hall is in maximum chaos mode just three weeks into the 2023 NFL season. You really can’t make this stuff up.
No new updates on Alan Williams
Last week, Bears Defensive Coordinator Alan Williams didn’t participate in his regularly scheduled media availability due to personal reasons. A day later, Eberflus announced that he would be calling defensive plays in Week 2 and that Williams would not be joining the team on its trip to Tampa Bay. There was no timetable for Williams’ return then and there appears not to be one now. Eberflus declining to answer questions about whether Williams will return, if the two have spoken, and if he is still employed with the team are troubling. Oof. What an odd situation this is turning into for the Bears.
Alan Williams was hired as the Bears’ defensive coordinator in February 2022 shortly after Matt Eberflus came on board as the team’s new head coach. Williams was the Colts safeties coach while he and Eberflus were in Indianapolis. And before Eberflus took the reins as the defensive play caller, Williams was calling the shots for Eberflus’ defense. How much longer that will be the case is uncertain. But that Eberflus has no public answers for any questions that have to do with Williams adds a layer of mystery on what (from the outside) looks like an ominous situation.
