The Washington Commanders have moved quickly to reshape their front office, reportedly hiring 49ers’ assistant GM Adam Peters as their head of football operations this morning.
Commanders to Hire 49ers’ Adam Peters
In the latest development for the Washington Commanders, the team is hiring Adam Peters as their new head of football operations, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
Adam Peters most recently served as the assistant general manager for the San Francisco 49ers over the past three years. Now, Peters is set to take on a pivotal role in shaping the Commanders’ football operations.
Rapoport also notes that Peters will have a significant say in determining the team’s leadership structure, overseeing the establishment of key roles beneath him. This includes decisions regarding the fate of Martin Mayhew, who held the position of general manager for the Commanders before Peters’ hiring.
This means that Bears Assistant GM Ian Cunningham will be sticking around in Chicago for a little while longer. Cunningham was one of the finalists for the Commanders’ job as recently as yesterday. He is also linked to the Chargers’ GM vacancy and could be on the Raiders’ radar for the same position. So, there’s still a chance that Cunningham gets hired in this cycle. If that’s the case, the Bears would receive a third-round draft pick as compensation.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported this morning that “some in league circles are watching a potential pairing of Lions OC Ben Johnson” with Peters. That would be quite the one-two punch for the Commanders this offseason.
Titans to Interview Antonio Pierce
Antonio Pierce, who led the Las Vegas Raiders to a winning record as the interim head coach this season, is exploring opportunities beyond the desert. While he made a positive impact with a 5-4 record after taking over midseason, Pierce is not limiting his options to Vegas for the 2024 coaching landscape.
Reports earlier this week indicated that the Tennessee Titans sought permission to interview Pierce, and according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the interview is scheduled for this weekend. The Titans are also set to interview Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan on Friday.
Pierce’s interim coaching stint with the Raiders received acclaim, earning endorsements from key players on the team. However, the Raiders’ focus this week has been on securing a new General Manager, potentially leaving Pierce open to exploring opportunities elsewhere.
It’s worth noting that in-person interviews with coaches currently employed by other teams cannot take place until after the divisional round of the playoffs. This provides a window for both the Titans and other interested teams to evaluate their options and potentially consider Antonio Pierce as a candidate for their coaching positions. The coaching carousel continues, and Pierce’s journey in the 2024 season is yet to unfold.
