The new coaching staff around Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus is rounding into form.
Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports the Bears are hiring Chad Morton as the team’s new running backs coach. Morton fills the role once held by David Walker on Eberflus’ staff. Walker was fired during the 2023 season after an HR issue. But now, it’ll be Morton’s position group to run moving forward.
Morton joins new hires on the offensive side of the ball including Shane Waldron (Offensive Coordinator), Kerry Joseph (Quarterbacks Coach), Chris Beatty (Wide Receivers Coach), and Thomas Brown (Passing Game Coordinator). Plus, the Bears also brought Eric Washington on board as the team’s new defensive coordinator. It’s been a busy month for Chicago’s football team, to say the least.
Who is Chad Morton?
Morton came up on our radar when new Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron began lining up interviews for his staff. This is what we had to say about Morton at the time:
Morton was a fifth-round pick (166th overall) by the New Orleans Saints in 2000. His playing career included stops with the Saints (2000), Jets (2001-02), Washington (2003-04), and Giants (2005-06). Since hanging ’em up, Morton has turned to coaching with stops in Green Bay (2009-13) and Seattle (2014-present) Morton has worked with special teams and running backs. Chicago has an opening at RBs Coach that Morton could slide into this offseason.
If the name Chad Morton rings a bell, it might be because you might remember him as one of 10 players to have two kick return touchdowns in a single game.
As a bonus, Chad Morton is a product of USC’s football team. Maybe his Trojan links could be helpful in reaching out to fellow USC guy Caleb Williams. College connections can work in such strange ways sometimes.
All things considered, it looks like Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus is building a quality staff. Maybe it looks weird to some to get a bunch of ex-Seahawks assistants. But the way I’m trying to see it is that if they were good enough for a competitive Pete Carroll’s staff, then maybe there is hope for them on the Bears.
