Chicago Blackhawks NHL Draft Lottery Fun Facts

Macklin Celebrini Boston University Frozen Four

As we get closer to the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, here are some fun facts from past draft lotteries to keep in mind as we cross our fingers the Blackhawks move up to No. 1 overall — again. It’s been ten years since a team moved up one spot to the top position, and history really doesn’t like the Blackhawks staying where they’re starting the lottery tonight.

  • Between 2012 and 2023, a team moved up into the No. 1 overall pick in seven of eleven lotteries. Before the Blackhawks won the draft lottery last year, the team with the best odds — Montreal (2022) and Buffalo (2021) — retained the top pick.
  • In both the 2021 and 2022 NHL Draft Lotteries, teams won the second lottery to move up to the No. 2 pick: New Jersey moved up from No. 5 to 2 in 2022 and Seattle moved up from No. 3 to 2 in 2021. No team with the second-best odds has stayed at the No. 2 overall pick since 2011.
  • Since 2010, only three teams have moved up from the second-best odds to pick No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft Lottery:
    2012 — Edmonton Oilers — Nail Yakupov
    2013 — Colorado Avalanche — Nathan MacKinnon
    2014 — Florida Panthers — Aaron Ekblad
  • In 2007, the Blackhawks moved up from 5th to 1st in the NHL Draft Lottery. They selected Patrick Kane.
  • The most the Blackhawks have moved up in the NHL Draft Lottery is from 12th to 3rd in 2019. They selected Kirby Dach.
  • The last time no team moved up in the NHL Draft Lottery was 2010, when the Oilers selected Taylor Hall.
  • In 1999, the Blackhawks moved up from 8th to 4th overall in the draft lottery. Chicago traded that pick to Vancouver in a cascading series of moves that landed the Sedin brothers in Vancouver at Nos. 2 and 3.
