If you were hoping to find out what the artist formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes / Utah’s new NHL franchise’s nickname could be, you might want to brace for disappointment. This week, ownership of the newest NHL franchise — led by Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith — revealed a list of 20 team nickname choices that were sent to fans through a survey.
While fans will have the chance to vote on their favorite nickname for the Utah NHL team, it appears we won’t know the winner until the 2025-26 season. Smith announced that next season, Utah will have jerseys with just the name of the state on them. They will take next season to work with a branding company and come up with a name, logo, color scheme, and uniforms that will come into play for 2025-26.
Potential Utah NHL Team Nicknames
Well, it’s good to have options I guess! I don’t think it’s the most inspiring list, and honestly, I’m not totally sure why they can’t have a name, logo, and branding done before next season but that’s not my decision to make or money to spend.
If I had a say in it, Mammoth would have my vote. I’m just a huge fan of that potential logo, and I think it fits in well with Utah. Can’t you just picture the team taking the ice for a playoff series and skating out through the tusks of a giant inflatable wooly mammoth?!
I could also get on board with Yeti or Mountaineers I think. Some of those names are pretty generic, but on a list of 20, you’re bound to have some not-great ones.
No matter what the name is though, I am excited to see an NHL franchise in Utah. I think it will be a very fun fanbase and it has an ownership group that clearly has a plan in place and has been angling for this for a while.
